Trash talk
My sister has just moved to the Brisbane suburb of Clayfield. Yesterday I went to see how she's settled in the new place. As luck would have it, it's Clayfield's turn for the kerbside collection. My sister's neighbour had a pile of things on the footpath including this beautful timber lamp base.

As we were popping it into the back of the car, the lady came out to add something to the pile. She said it was good quality, and English? Judging by the weight of it, I believe her.
It's difficult to maintain one's dignity whilst sifting through someone's rubbish in front of them. I think I may have had an out of body experience, to overcome the embarrasment, but I really, really wanted the lampbase.....to add to my other timber lampbase, also awaiting restoration.
Soon I will be popping off to Target or some such chain store for a plain drum lampshade to recover myself. I'll let you know how I go.

  1. This is so funny and I can relate Madam. The things we do!
Try sitting on an old Singer pedal sewing machine stand to claim possession while your other half sprints home to fetch the trailer.
    I died a thousand deaths.

  2. What a great find! Well done! I am sure the lady of the house didn't mind and was probably happy that it was going to someone who would look after it. ;-)

  4. Faux Fuchsia, We have disposed of the majority of the contents either by way of the dump, Ebay, giveaways to friends, the Salvos, or returning personal items to Mr Baby. It was a walk in/walk out job. The kitchen still had food, the bathroom had Gwen's make-up, there were false teeth, very old linen, brandy from the 1940s, gas lamps, everything, everything. I think if you have a look at the beginning of the blog you'll see a lot of befores, and during the reno I posted a lot of afters. I'll see if I can put together a more consolidated 'collage' of them...it'll take time though. I'll have a sifle through my pics tonight actually.
